GAME Plans

When looking at the NETS-T standards, I realized that I feel pretty confident in most of them however, I do need to work on my proficiency.  In order to be more proficient in these standards, I will need to be sure to create a GAME plan that I will stick to, including deadlines I set for myself to make sure I accomplish the goals I establish.

The first indicator is:
Indicator 2a: Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.

G- My Goal:
-My goal for this indicator is to incorporate the use of technology for students into more of my lessons. The incorporation may occur during a mini-lesson or it may occur as the main component in my main lesson.

A- Action:
-The action I am going to take for this goal is to begin analyzing the content I am covering on a deeper level. I will think about the various forms of technology available to my students, and find ways to allow for student use and engagement. The content will be my basis; however the use of technology tools will enrich the lessons.

M-Monitor:
-To help monitor the achievement of this goal, I plan on creating a checklist of technology tools available. As they are incorporated into lessons, I will check them off. I also plan on working with a colleague to help ensure that the technology being used in enriching the lesson and not hindering student learning.

E- Evaluation:
-With the checklist, I plan on documenting a brief reflection of the integration of the various technologies. Hopefully, as result, I will be able to see student growth in technology use as well as content knowledge. I will continue to work with my colleague, and use evaluations from them to determine whether or not my goal was achieved.

The second indicator is:
Indicator 3c: Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-safe media and formats.

G- My Goal:
-The goal for this indicator is to create a user friendly website of blog in which I communicate with parents, students, and the community on the exciting things occurring within the classroom.

A-Action:
- To achieve this goal, I would like to discuss with students uses they would like to see happen with a classroom blog or webpage. I would also communicate to my parents my desire for this communication, and hopefully the responses will show that they would be interested in being a vital component of the communication. Since I already have this blog created, it would be easier to incorporate the needs of my classroom into this blog and make parents and students aware of what information they would find by looking at this blog.

M- Monitor:
-To monitor this goal, I would keep track of the number of visitors to the blog or webpage. I would also document the number of comments and posts concerning classroom needs to make sure it is being used as a vital communication tool between school and home.

E-Evaluation:
-At the end of the school year, I would take a survey from parents and students, on how useful they thought the webpage/blog was. If they did not find it useful, I would ask for their opinions how I could change it be more beneficial.

  1. Sam,

I think it's fabulous that you feel confident in most of the NETS-T standards. There are several that I have to work on as well. A GAME plan is an organized way to improve an area. Like you, I think it is important to set deadlines. I know with my busy schedule, I would not accomplish something if I did not put it on my calendar and make time for it. That goes for school and personal goals.

I think you have a great first goal of integrating technology into your lessons. Technology is a great way to engage and motivate the students to create for a meaningful learning expereince. Does your school have the resources for you to do this?

In addition to this, I think a checklist is a great way to keep track of what the students have been exposed to already. There are numerous tools that would be effective for students to use and a checklist would keep you nice and organized.

I too wrote about communicating relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-safe media and formats. Have you established a website yet? Weebly is a great and easy way to communicate with everyone (www.weebly.com). I created a webstite through weebly for a summer reading project and it was very easy. I also have a website through the district. I update it often, however, our population does not have the resrouces at home to access it. What is the clientle like at your school? Would the students be able to check out a website if you created one?

I enjoyed reading your GAME plan. I hope it works well for you.

    1. Tiffini,
My school does have some technology resources, such as a SMARTBoard in the classroom, the "clickers" that go with SMART Notebook software, and we do have 2 computer labs available. I would like to see my school purchase a laptop cart or iPad class set and I discuss this with administration on a regular basis. As for now, I am going to work on implementing the technology that is available.
If I created a website, I would say that half of my students would have access to it at home. The town I teach in is very small, and the other half of the class has access to the local public library, which the majority of them do use on a regular basis. I hope the website would be motivation for them to visit the library more so they can become more familiar with internet usage outside of the school setting.
I am going to look into weebly.com when I begin this process. Thank you for your response!

  2. Hi Samantha,

You may want to check out Edmodo.com to communicate with parents and allow students to communicate with each other. It is set up alot like Facebook, but you can control what students can do as an administrator of your site. I also chose indicator 3c for my GAME plan, and have been honing in on Edmodo as I have considered several other options to communicate with parents.

    Regards,

    Michael

  3. Samantha,
I like your idea of a getting a website or blog going with your classes. Google sites is another way to do this. I made a site just recently for a Service Learning class I am co-teaching and it was surprisingly easy. One of the ongoing assignments for the course is to have the students journal their experiences in the course, I have been posting their journals to the website "Journals" page. The principal, teachers and parents who have the link can go to the site and read the journals as well as check-out the pictures and videos from some of the activities we have been doing. Just some more ideas for you to think about, I think you have picked some good goals to work toward!

    1. Hi Sandy, it is a great idea to get students to learn how to determine whether or not a source is credible. Students seem to think that anything they read on the internet is true. It is true that web literacy is overlooked, and as a teacher of intensive reading, it would only benefit students and raise their reading levels if they are taught web literacy. It happens to be one of my weaknesses, but through this course I plan on working on this and incorporating it into my lessons. Even though I have to follow a reading program; I see now that I can incorporate technology and engaging projects into the program without compromising the infidelity of the program. While the district wants us to be innovative they also want us to stay true to the program that we use.
